Cleaning CDs and DVDs isn't very dangerous thing if you do it with caution. If your cd started skiping tracks or read errors occur the first thing to do is clean it. Cd-rom laser has to read very small tracks and even tiny dust or dirt can prevent from doing that correctly. Follow these steps to safely clean your CDs and DVDs:
Step 1 Use plain water or special cleaning fluid. Put it on the piece of cloth.
Step 2 Clean the cd by brushing gently from center to edges. Don't brush in circles!
Step 3 Wipe until your cd is clean.

As a cloth you can use a soft, lint-free cloth or smooth unscented toilet paper.
